2010 Talent Show!

S/D Kabeer Shah welcomed everyone to the 2nd annual RVUCOM Talent Show! As the MC of the event he had an evening of jokes and skits for the audience to enjoy.

The night's talent included performances from both classes. Magician Chris Bender from the Class of 2014 was especially entertaining and he went on to win 2nd place overall! The main event featured a Wi boxing event between Dean Bruce Dubin and S/D Amanda Jo Cameron.
Though Dr. Dubin went on to win the close match, the two competitors remained in good spirits!
Winners from Class of 2013 include Nabila Waheed, 2nd place in the cooking competition for her delicious chile
Jason Burchett, 3rd place in the cooking competition for his quiche
Julie Watters and her husband Joel, 1st place for their class and 3rd place overall in the Talent Competition
Dr. Pales took the competition by storm, winning both the 1st place faculty and 1st place overall prize with his comedic songs about medical school.
Start planning your talents for next year everyone- the competition is steep!

Venipuncture, IV and EKG Lab

Our latest clinical escapade was a bloody one! The afternoon included venipunctures, IV puntures and EKGs!
Class Prez- Joshua Gazzetta, a veteran venipunture pro, let S/D Jessica Small practice drawing blood on his arm.
S/D Amanda Jo Cameron practices safe biohazard techniques and properly disposes of her sharps!

S/Ds Waheed and Hull show off their IV placement skills. S/D Hull was covered in bandaids by the end of the period! What a good friend to allow so many people to practice on him!

S/D Buetow looks handy with a needle! Dont worry S/D Allen! He looks like he's done this before!

S/D Helm places an IV catheter in a vein in S/D Hull's forearm.

Dr. Unrein shows his group of students how to set up an EKG and print out a reading. He was also the professor that lead most of our EKG lectures for the Cardiovascular unit.

All wounds aside, we learned a very valuable skill today and look forward to using it soon! Bring on rotations!

SOMA Sports Physicals at Morey Middle School!

SOMA members, along with several faculty, recently volunteered their time performing sports physicals for the children of Morey Middle School and the surrounding areas. Children ages 4 to 17 came through on a Saturday morning to be cleared for athletics.

Most of the students were second years but a select few first years were allowed to participate by helping at check in because of their stong history of clinical experience.

Stations were set up throughout the school gymnasium for HEENT, cardio-pulm, abdomen/hernia, neuro, and musculoskeletal checks. Students above prepare their equipment for the HEENT and cardio-pulm stations. Student Doctors Amanda Larson and Erica Ogle check out a young patient for any neurological abnormalities.

Student Doctor Kabeer Shah does an abdominal check while Dr. Unrein educates some students about how to do a hernia exam. The majority of the children given physicals were healthy- and happily granted the ability to play sports. Next year looks to help even more families. Thank you SOMA, DOMA, and RVU faculty for all your hard work!

Cath Lab

The lab began with demostrations by faculty. Drs. Kamstra and Darrow show students how to insert a catheter into a male urethra.

Then, each student got hands on with the manikins! Student doc. Lindsey Remme shows off her skills with a French Cath!
Dr. Kanze presented a case on pyelonephritis to a group of students who then had to ask the pertinent questions, create a differential, and decide which tests to run.
Here, Student doc. Mallory Meyer tests her urine for protein, sugar, pH changes, and bacteria! All clear!

Student Doc. Christina Duncan checks out a urine specimen under the microscope! A good opportunity to see RBCs, WBCs, and epithelial cells up close!

This lab turned out to be pretty exciting- just ask Student doctor Tyler Lewandowski!

Scrubbin'

Welcome back everyone for a brand new year of PCM fun! As second years we've moved on from the basics of SOAP noting and to graduated to the fundamentals of surgical prep and procedure! Enjoy a little recap of the past month's shananagans...

Dr. Kamstra shows his group how to scrub in and dry off while maintaining a sterile environment.

Team work was key in this lab- getting properly scrubbed and gowned can be tricky!

Here, students put on a surgical gown the sterile way- keeping their hands inside the cuffs while donning their gloves.

We learned lots of little tricks- like taping your glasses to your forehead to prevent them from sliding down your nose during surgery..

Is that an OR or PCM III??...It's getting harder to tell..

See you next time! Keep it clean everyone!

RVU'S END OF THE YEAR GALA!

The End of the Year Gala marks the end of the the first year for the Class of 2013! Some may have said this day would never come, but it did. Congratulations everyone! The Gala gave everyone a reason to come out and celebrate the awesome achievement of making it through a year of medical school.
Student Doctors and guests were joined by faculty and staff for a great night of dinner and dancing.

After cocktail hour and socializing, the fun began. Student and faculty awards were given out. For the faculty the Fighting Prairie Dog Award went to Dr. Joseph Stasio, the Unsung Hero Award went to Matt Griebel, the Administrative Award went to Lisa Bolstad, the William Osler Teaching Award for Excellence in Biomedical Science was a tie between Dr. Walter Buck and Dr. Richard Garrison, and the A.T. Still Teaching Award for Excellence in Clinical Science went to Dr. Joseph Stasio!

For the student doctor awards, the top 10% of the class of 2013 was recognized (listed alphabetically): Michael Allender, Casey Bitting, Brent Enniss, Joshua Garfein, Thomas Githens, Bonnie Hunt, Tyler Hurst, Eric Mast, Erika Penabaker, Sheena Ray, Justin Stoll, Lauren Tobin, Katie Truettner, Jon Vaux, Tyler Voigt, and Kayleigh Zerr.

The Department awards were also awarded to some first year student doctors. Benjamin Foreman received the FSM award. Brent Barbour received the research recognition award.

The Class of 2013 Student Leader award went to current class president Josh Gazzetta.

The student doctor congeniality award went to Amanda Jo Cameron, and the winner of the class of 2013 class clown award was Russell Pieper.

The class of 2013 book nerd award went to Hugo Rivera, and last but not least, the class of 2013 squeaky wheel award went to Nabila Waheed.

A special congratulations to all of the award winners, and to the other student doctors who were nominated. You all have done a wonderful job, and we appreciate the different ways in which you contribute to our class!

After the awards there was a 2013 version of a faculty roast. We were pleasantly entertained by Dr. Routh (played by Jonathan Lind), Dr. Putthoff (played by Jon Moran), Dr. Laura Mohr (played by Lee Bette), and Student Doctor Josh Gazzetta (played by Stephen Cox). Needless to say, the impressions were right on, and we will hopefully have some video of that on the blog soon! Also, thanks to those who were impersonated. They were all great sports.

After dinner and a little bit of socializing, it was time for dancing. Student doctors and Doctors alike took to the floor to show what they had been bottling up for an entire year. All I can say is there was a lot of dancing going on and no one was holding back... no one:)

We hope everyone who came had a great time. If you didn't make it this year, hopefully we will see you next year. Thanks to everyone involved in planning the event. There was a ton of work put into it and there were some students who really stepped up. Thank you again.
Don't forget to upload any pictures to the photobucket account, or check out the ones of you that are on there. HAVE A GREAT SUMMER BREAK!!!

2nd Annual Rocky Run 5K

SOMA's Rocky Run had a huge turnout this year! 112 RVUCOM students, faculty, family members, (and a surprising number of dogs-23 total!) came to support the event! The runners are pictured here awaiting the starting whistle!

And they're off!

Student Doctor Chris Healy destroyed the competition- completing the 5K in just over 17 minutes!!!
After the race RVUCOM's UAAO was available to treat the runners' injuries and aching muscles. Several faculty members from the OPP department came to support the cause and supervise UAAO students.

Here, Dr. Jons- Cox checks Student Doctor Amber Pelzl's diagnosis of a lumbar somatic dysfunction.

Student Doctor and OMM Fellow Jeremy Kenison treats one of the parents that ran in the 5K.
Student Doctor Sara Ponce sought out the help of Student Doctor Joe Krakker when she injured her pelvic muscles while running.
Even a fighting prairie dog showed up to show his school spirit!

Thanks for a great event everyone! See you next year!
