SOMA Sports Physicals at Morey Middle School!

SOMA members, along with several faculty, recently volunteered their time performing sports physicals for the children of Morey Middle School and the surrounding areas. Children ages 4 to 17 came through on a Saturday morning to be cleared for athletics.

Most of the students were second years but a select few first years were allowed to participate by helping at check in because of their stong history of clinical experience.

Stations were set up throughout the school gymnasium for HEENT, cardio-pulm, abdomen/hernia, neuro, and musculoskeletal checks. Students above prepare their equipment for the HEENT and cardio-pulm stations. Student Doctors Amanda Larson and Erica Ogle check out a young patient for any neurological abnormalities.

Student Doctor Kabeer Shah does an abdominal check while Dr. Unrein educates some students about how to do a hernia exam. The majority of the children given physicals were healthy- and happily granted the ability to play sports. Next year looks to help even more families. Thank you SOMA, DOMA, and RVU faculty for all your hard work!

Cath Lab

The lab began with demostrations by faculty. Drs. Kamstra and Darrow show students how to insert a catheter into a male urethra.

Then, each student got hands on with the manikins! Student doc. Lindsey Remme shows off her skills with a French Cath!
Dr. Kanze presented a case on pyelonephritis to a group of students who then had to ask the pertinent questions, create a differential, and decide which tests to run.
Here, Student doc. Mallory Meyer tests her urine for protein, sugar, pH changes, and bacteria! All clear!

Student Doc. Christina Duncan checks out a urine specimen under the microscope! A good opportunity to see RBCs, WBCs, and epithelial cells up close!

This lab turned out to be pretty exciting- just ask Student doctor Tyler Lewandowski!
